Future-proofing with Zero Energy Ready Homes (ZERH)

When we delivered the first 11 homes at Lively Lane, we were proud to have them receive ENERGY STAR® certification (read a previous blog post here to learn more). For the 18 additional townhomes completing in 2025, we’re taking it a step further by designing and constructing to the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home (DOE ZERH) certification program. The ZERH program applies some of the most stringent energy-saving standards the USA has to offer — essentially adopting the construction standards of the future today. Watch the short video below and read on to learn more about this innovative program!

What Makes Zero Energy Ready Homes Special?

Ultra-Low Energy Bills: If you’re shopping for a new home, you may come across something called the Home Energy Rating Score (HERS). A typical new construction home is indexed to a HERS of 100 and the lower the better. All 2025 homes at Lively Lane are on track to achieve a HERS in the low-to-mid 40s! That translates to energy savings of more than 50% compared to standard new homes. This is achieved through a combination of high-performance thermal enclosures, efficient HVAC systems, and ENERGY STAR® certified appliances. You can check out the projected HERS for your favorite floor plan on the flyer linked at each townhome page. Ever dream of cutting your energy bills in half? That's what’s up at Lively Lane.

Superior Comfort: ZERH homes create a cozy cocoon to keep you comfortable year-round by using modern building techniques like advanced framing and enhanced inspections to deliver a sound thermal enclosure. High-performance windows, superior insulation, and comprehensive draft protection work together to provide optimal natural light and consistent temperatures throughout your home.

Breathe Easy: Our homes also incorporate EPA Indoor airPLUS features that work to keep the air inside your home so fresh and so clean. This means using materials that minimize harmful chemicals, avoiding things like gas appliances and VOC-laden floor glues and paints, and including a fresh air ventilator system on every HVAC system. The EPA Indoor airPLUS certification helps provide you peace of mind as you take first deep breath inside your new home. Ahhhh.

Water-Wise Design: We've implemented whole-house water protection to keep your home dry and moisture-free. Our dry-by-design construction includes a comprehensive water barrier system and interior moisture control, maximizing your home's defense against weather and moisture damage. This not only protects your investment but also contributes to a healthier living environment. Want to take a deep dive on the specifics of our exterior envelope? Click here!

High-Performance Everything: From HVAC systems to appliances, every component is chosen for maximum efficiency. We use high-efficiency equipment and ensure professional installation. ENERGY STAR® certified water heaters, appliances, lighting, and exhaust fans save significant amounts of energy and thousands of gallons of water annually. And with an integrated Manabloc water distribution system, you'll even save time waiting for hot water!

Solar-Ready: Every homeowner at Lively Lane has the opportunity to participate in the on-site community solar installation atop the rooftops and carports in the neighborhood. Simply add on solar shares as part of our GoZero offerings and you can offset some or all of your home’s remaining energy consumption, bringing you as close to zero monthly energy bills as you’d like. Plus, every townhome comes with an EV-ready parking space, complete with the infrastructure to support an EV charging station, so you can easily add on a charger for an electric vehicle.
