Just Around the Corner: Schools

Maria Hernandez Elementary School, just around the corner from Lively Lane

Maria Hernandez Elementary School

One of the great perks of Lively Lane’s location is the proximity to a few local schools. Just under a mile away (a 16-minute walk / five-minute bike ride) is Maria Hernandez Elementary School; and, Doris Miller Middle School, is located just a little over a mile away, or a 24-minute walk / seven-minute bike ride, as highlighted on the following map.

Hernandez welcomes students ages, 5 to 11, kindergarten through 5th grade; and Miller welcomes students ages, 11 to 14, grades 6th through 8th. Both schools are part of the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD). Read on to learn a little more about the school district and its recent improvement projects.

The district coined the term “small town feel, big time access” to sum up their dedication to educating the young minds of the San Marcos area.  In partnership with parents and the community, SMCISD’s mission is to provide a quality education to all students, empowering them to pursue productive and fulfilling lives.

2017 Existing School Improvements Construction Bond

Active members in the San Marcos community voted and approved a $107 million construction bond package due to SMCISD’s increasing enrollment in 2017. This comes with the intentions of creating equality across all district elementary schools and a desire for all students to have the same opportunities.

Some of the exciting improvements coming to schools in SMCISD include the following:

  • Library update for 21st century learning and renovations of provide small group/project-based learning spaces at Hernandez Elementary

  • Increased capacity of San Marcos High School to 2,700 students with the addition of Career and Tech Expansion and Renovations

  • New buses and addition of a transportation building for additional buses including site infrastructure and parking lots
