Community Spots: Downtown San Marcos + The River

You truly haven’t lived like a San Martian until you’ve explored Downtown or spent a relaxing, sunny day by the River. Once you settle into a home at Lively Lane, planning a trip down to the heart of San Marcos should be one of the first items on your bucket list. At just a 20-minute bike ride or 10-minute drive away, Downtown and the River are sure to be on your regular list of go-to spots in town.

Stroll around Downtown San Marcos

There are also a variety of regular events Downtown including a farmer’s market every Saturday morning and Art Squared, a showcase of local artwork for sale around the Downtown Square every second Saturday (March – December).

There are many great eateries to stop at for a quick bite after a morning of shopping, including Blue Dalia Bistro, Café on the Square, Industry, and The Root Cellar. Don’t forget to grab a treat afterwards, maybe from Rhea’s Ice Cream or Stellar Coffee.

Take in a Performance at Texas State

Directly adjacent to Downtown San Marcos is the 500-acre Texas State University campus and its state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center is conveniently located right at the edge of Downtown. Since opening its doors in 2014, the University has held a number of theatre, dance, and musical performances here from the student body.

Texas State’s Performing Arts Center provides the City with many “dinner and a show” opportunities, exciting for the whole family or a date with that special someone. Visit the Texas State Presents website to view the upcoming shows at the Performing Arts Center.

Chill by the San Marcos River

Once the sun’s out, everyone is out by the River! This City is well-known for the beautiful San Marcos River that stays at a constant 72 degrees year-round and is purportedly one of the cleanest rivers in Texas and the country.

Many residents congregate at destinations like Rio Vista Park (see cover image) or Sewell Park to hang out by the River, both of which are walking distance from Downtown San Marcos. Feeling a bit adventurous? Grab a tube from Lions Club and float downstream.

There are a handful of parks perfect for a picnic and float in the San Marcos River. Take a look at the map below to explore all the best spots in town along the River:
